The Accra sports stadium would soon be closed down for repair works in the stands.

Deputy sports minister, Plus Enam Hadzide said the decision to close down the national stadium was taken after an extensive audit of the stadium which was refurbished to for the hosting of the 2008 AFCON tournament.

The Accra sports stadium have been in a poor state nine years after the hosting of the tournament.

The scoreboard is not working with most of the metals in the stands rusting away.

Washrooms at the facility are also not working which inconveniences sportsmen and supporters who troop there to partake in sporting activities.

The stands are also becoming weaker by the day with experts cautioning that there is a looming disaster if the stadium is not closed for repair works.

And after a careful audit, Enam Hadzide said the stadium would have to be closed down for repair works in the coming months.

Other stadia in the country including those in Essipong, Kumasi and Tamale are also expected to follow same process.

The closure of the stadium might lead Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics which uses the stadium as their home grounds for the Ghana premier league matches to consider playing at the El Wak Sports Stadium or the Dansoman Carl Reindolf park.
