The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) is set to roll out an insurance policy for Senior High School students.
The move according to the National President of the Council, Alexander Yaw Danso is to secure the future of the children.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Friday, he said every student is entitled to pay GH₵7 a term.
He indicated that, though it is not compulsory, it is important for parents to protect the lives of their children who are “our pensions”.
Mr. Danso explained that under the insurance cover, students are entitled to medical care and compensations should they be involved in any accident.
However, he noted if students are not involved in any accident, the premiums will be used to support the schools in any activity.
Mr. Alexander Danso said they have the approval of Ghana Education Service to roll out the policy in schools across the country.
But in a rebuttal, Chairman Gender Committee of Parliament, Kojo Appiah Kubi vehemently kicked against the PTA’s insurance policy.
He indicated that, they intend to use the backdoor to introduce fees which will overburden parents whose wards are enjoying free SHS.
Gender Committee Chairman noted that, though the policy is good, the time is very bad.
Hon. Appiah Kubi urged the PTA to intensify education on the insurance policy and make it optional for parents.
