The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has commended the management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, for the progress made in its first year of implementation.
The Association said the Fund represented an important commitment to strengthening healthcare financing, improving access to essential medical services and supporting Ghanaians living with chronic and life-threatening diseases.
In a statement signed by GAMLS President, Dr Eric Kofi Aidoo, and General Secretary, Dr Solomon Kwashie, on behalf of the Association’s leadership and members on October 14, 2026, GAMLS particularly welcomed the decision to separate service tariffs, including medical laboratory fees, under the programme.
It said the move would promote transparency in healthcare costing, improve recognition of individual service components and ensure medical laboratory investigations receive appropriate consideration in the financing of patient care.
According to the Association, medical laboratory services are essential to accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, disease monitoring and improved clinical outcomes.
It said the explicit recognition of these services within the programme’s tariff structure reinforced the important role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in the healthcare system.
GAMLS encouraged the Fund’s leadership to maintain engagement with relevant professional groups to ensure the programme responds to the needs of patients and healthcare providers.
The Association also called for sustainable funding, transparent reimbursement mechanisms and the timely settlement of claims for services provided, particularly medical laboratory investigations that support clinical decision-making.
It expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to promote equitable access to quality diagnostic services and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
GAMLS congratulated the Fund’s management and other stakeholders on the milestone and expressed hope for continued progress in providing financial relief and improving healthcare access for Ghanaians who need support.
