The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it is working with the police to determine when Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) can reopen following its closure amid allegations of sexual abuse involving the school’s headmaster.

GES Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

Mr. Fenyi explained that the decision to reopen the school would depend on when the environment is considered safe and conducive for academic activities.

He said the school was closed based on intelligence gathered by the police, making their input crucial to determining when students could return.

“We are still engaging with the police on the reopening of the school because its closure was based on intelligence provided by them,” Mr Fenyi said.

He added that the GES would allow students to return once the necessary conditions had been met.

“When the environment is safe and conducive for academic activities, we will reopen the school for the students to return. Especially now that the headmaster has been interdicted,” he stated.

The closure follows allegations of sexual abuse involving the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, which triggered protests and raised concerns about the safety of students on campus.

The GES has since interdicted the headmaster while investigations into the allegations continue.

The Service says the decision is intended to protect the integrity of the process and prevent possible interference with the investigation.

The development has also raised concerns about the academic future of students, particularly those in their final years preparing for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The GES has yet to announce a specific date for the reopening of Obuasi SHTS, with discussions with the police continuing over the conditions required for students to safely resume academic activities.
