Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has challenged his players to improve their finishing as Ghana prepare to face Mauritius in the second leg of their second-round qualifying tie for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Ghana take a commanding 3-0 lead into Tuesday’s return fixture after winning the first leg at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius last Thursday.
A win or draw at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi-Takoradi will secure the Black Queens’ progression to the third round, but Björkegren has urged his side to approach the encounter with focus and professionalism.
“We need to make sure we start the game in the best way possible. We need to be serious, be professional, and make sure to kill the game as soon as possible,” he told GFA Media.
Despite the comfortable first-leg victory, the Swedish coach was unhappy with the number of scoring opportunities Ghana failed to convert.
He believes the team must become more efficient in front of goal if they are to make the most of their attacking dominance.
“The negative thing is that we miss too many chances. Sometimes we are a little bit unlucky, but when it happens game after game, when you hit the post, and the ball goes out instead of going in, then sometimes it is also a question of quality,” he said.
Björkegren added that Ghana could have scored more goals in the first leg and challenged his players to deliver a more clinical performance in the return encounter.
“I would say that on a normal day, we score three or four goals at least. Hopefully, it is going to be better tomorrow,” he added.
The Black Queens will kick off at 15:00 GMT, with qualification for the next round within reach.
Ghana are seeking a historic first appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, having never qualified since the introduction of women’s football at the Olympic Games in 1996.
Should they progress, the Black Queens will face either Zambia or Uganda in the third round of the qualifying competition.
