Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says the Black Stars must assemble their strongest possible squad for the remaining matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers if they are to secure a place at the tournament.

Ghana have endured a difficult start to their qualifying campaign, losing their opening two matches in Group C.

The four-time African champions suffered a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouaké before throwing away a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Those results have left Ghana bottom of the group without a point after two matches.

However, Afriyie believes their hopes of qualifying remain alive, insisting that selecting the best available players will be crucial to turning their campaign around.

“The Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are not over,” he told Sporty FM.

He added, “We should assemble the best squad for the rest of the games. It’s a league format, so if we can win the rest of the games, hopefully we will qualify.”

Ghana will return to action next month with a double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium as they seek to revive their campaign in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying.

The Black Stars will then host Ivory Coast before travelling to face The Gambia in their final group fixture.

Ghana are hoping to return to the continental showpiece after missing the previous edition, held in Morocco.

The 2027 AFCON will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
