Ghanaian hiplife musician and dancer Slim Buster has spoken out against the mockery and disrespect he says he faced when he first joined social media, insisting that veteran musicians must defend their reputations against online criticism.

Speaking on Adom TV’s ShowTym, the musician recounted how social media users targeted him with comments about his financial status and relevance in the music industry.

He said the experience was initially difficult, prompting him to study the profiles of people who trolled him before responding to their comments.

“When I came to social media in the beginning, it wasn’t easy. I used to be trolled a lot. They called me poor and other things,” he said.

Slim Buster explained that he would check the followers and posts of his critics to understand their online activities and prepare his responses.

He said the experience had made him more assertive, adding that musicians who remain silent in the face of negative claims risk allowing the public to believe what is being said about them.

According to him, younger music fans may not be familiar with the contributions of veteran artistes and could form opinions based on what they hear from others.

The musician also criticised what he described as toxic rivalry among fanbases supporting different artistes in the current music scene.

He described the behaviour as “demonic,” arguing that excessive loyalty to particular artistes prevents fans from appreciating good music beyond their preferred camps.

He called on all parties involved in the fanbase disputes to speak out and help address the situation.

Slim Buster further stressed that veteran musicians who helped shape Ghana’s music industry deserve respect, warning against the growing tendency to subject them to ridicule and dismiss their contributions.
