A police officer has been arrested after a shooting at Ritz Junction in Accra left two people with gunshot wounds, the Ghana Police Service has said.

In a statement signed by Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police said the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command is investigating the incident.

Preliminary investigations show that on Sunday, October 11, 2026, General Sergeant Mathew Aboase of the Madina Police Station had a confrontation with some drivers of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.

The police said the drivers tried to take the officer’s pistol, after he allegedly threatened them with it. During the struggle the weapon went off by accident and hit two people standing nearby.

The victims are Doe Asinyo, who was shot in the left thigh, and Gifty Nyimahen, 34, who was shot in the abdomen.

Both were taken to the Madina Pentecost Hospital where Doe Asinyo was treated and discharged. Gifty Nyimahen was admitted and later transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

The officer is in police custody while investigations continue, and his service pistol has been kept as evidence.

The Command said appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
