Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says he is concerned about the Black Stars’ poor performances following their disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana have lost their opening two Group C matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Ivory Coast in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The results have left the four-time African champions bottom of the group without a point, increasing pressure on the team to turn their fortunes around.

The disappointing start has also been followed by the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who stepped down from his position after the team’s struggles.

Speaking to Accra-based TV3, Mr Adams admitted that the Black Stars’ performances were a source of concern, pointing to deeper structural problems within Ghana football.

“We are worried about the performance of the Black Stars. The issue with our football is structural, involving both leadership and talent,” the Buem MP said.

Ghana will return to action next month with back-to-back fixtures against Somalia as they seek to revive their qualification hopes.

The matches, scheduled for the third and fourth rounds of the qualifiers, will be overseen by an interim technical team appointed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The GFA is expected to appoint a substantive head coach before Ghana’s final group matches next year.

The Black Stars are seeking to qualify for the 2027 AFCON tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, after missing out on the 2025 edition in Morocco.
