Medeama SC coach Tanko Ibrahim has praised his players for showing character in their 1-0 victory over Debibi United in the Ghana Premier League.
Medeama secured all three points despite dealing with a number of injuries and facing a difficult away trip.
“We have a lot of injured players, but those who started today showed good character, and to win here is very important,” Tanko said after the match.
The victory moved Medeama to the top of the league table, with Tanko insisting his side are taking the campaign one match at a time as they look to retain their title.
“We are taking it one game at a time. Hopefully, if we win more games, we can retain the league title, and that is what we intend to do,” he added.
Tanko also revealed that the club’s busy schedule since their CAF Champions League exit had contributed to fatigue among the players.
Medeama have spent much of the period on the road and the coach said the squad would be given a short break to recover before preparations begin for their next fixture.
He also praised the players for their effort and thanked the club’s supporters for their backing, stressing the difficulty of securing victories away from home.
Goalkeeper? No — match-winner Nana Kwasi Barbel, who scored the decisive goal, said Medeama approach every match with the belief that they can win.
“We approach every game with a winning mentality, so I am not surprised that we were able to win at Debibi,” Barbel said.
The forward, who has had limited playing time this season, said he always tries to make an impact whenever he is given an opportunity.
“I have not had enough playing time, but whenever I am called upon to play, I try to give my best for the team,” he added.
Barbel admitted that scoring the winning goal had given him a timely confidence boost.
The victory leaves Medeama top of the Ghana Premier League standings and sets up a meeting with Hearts of Oak in their Matchday 6 fixture.
