Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says a lack of adequate football infrastructure was among the reasons Carlos Queiroz decided to leave his position as Black Stars coach.
The GFA confirmed on October 1 that it had mutually parted ways with the 73-year-old Portuguese coach following Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars have lost both of their opening Group C matches and are yet to pick up a point.
Ghana opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouake before suffering a 4-2 loss to The Gambia in Accra.
The Black Stars had taken a 2-0 lead in the second match but conceded four times in the second half to leave their qualification hopes under serious pressure.
Asante Twum said Queiroz was particularly concerned that Ghana did not have a dedicated training base for the national team.
“One of the reasons why Carlos Queiroz has left his role is the lack of infrastructure in the country,” he told Kessben FM.
“Carlos Queiroz was surprised to find out that the Black Stars do not have a camp base where the team trains.
“He complained that he had never seen before that a national team does not have a camp base.”
Asante Twum said Queiroz was also unhappy that the Black Stars use the same venue for both training and competitive matches.
“He was disappointed to find out that where the team plays is the same place the team trains,” he added.
“He believes that it affects the team and does not help in getting a proper pitch, but the situation is that we have only one approved stadium, and he gave a scientific basis for his reasons.”
A five-member committee has been established to oversee the search for Queiroz’s successor, with its report expected to be submitted to the Sports Ministry on Friday, 9 October.
Ghana will return to 2027 AFCON qualifying action in October with a double-header against Somalia. Both matches are scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars are attempting to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The 2027 edition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
