The pressure on Ghana’s secondary school placement resolution centres is easing, with more than half of the over 53,000 students initially left without automatic placement now completing the self-placement process.
Press Secretary to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, Hashmin Mohammed, said the development has significantly reduced the number of parents and students reporting to the ministry’s resolution centres for assistance.
“We have moved beyond 50% of the over 53,000 students who were given the pathway to do self-placement,” Mohammed said on Accra-based Citi FM.
He said the figure of students who have so far secured admission through both automatic placement and self-placement had reached about 97,000.
“That tells you that we have given opportunity for more Ghanaian students to access secondary education,” he added.
According to Mr Mohammed, the situation has improved considerably in several parts of the country, with resolution centres in the Northern, Savannah and North East regions no longer experiencing the heavy influx of parents and students seen earlier.
He, however, identified the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as the areas where placement-related concerns remain more pronounced.
“In the Ashanti region, I interacted with the official high school coordinator for that region. And what he told me was that they are not receiving the numbers, the peak numbers that used to come to the resolution centre,” he stated.
Mr Mohammed noted that the ministry was yet to establish the exact number of students who had completed the self-placement process.
The self-placement option was introduced for students who could not secure automatic placement, allowing them to select schools with available vacancies.
