More than 3,000 residents have been forced from their homes in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, leaving more than 400 houses affected by the floods.
Several communities along the river have been inundated, with Zongo among the hardest-hit areas. More than half of the community is reported to be under water, forcing residents to flee as floodwaters spread into homes and surrounding areas.
The displaced residents are currently being housed in temporary locations, including classrooms, as authorities work to find more suitable shelter for them.
The scale of the disaster has stretched the capacity of the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, increasing the need for emergency support from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Hohoe MP Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo said the situation had become too overwhelming for local authorities to handle alone.
“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.
Mr Tsekpo praised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and security agencies for their intervention, particularly in evacuating residents from vulnerable areas and helping to avert possible loss of lives.
He said the emergency was far from over, noting that water levels were still rising despite the cessation of the heavy rains.
Authorities are therefore continuing efforts to protect residents in affected communities while seeking additional support to provide shelter and other urgent assistance to those displaced by the flooding.
