The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has explained the circumstances surrounding an attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
According to EOCO, its officers attempted to arrest the MP on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation.
In a statement, the Office said its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities.
EOCO said it had previously invited Mr Baffour Awuah on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with the investigation, but the invitations were not honoured.
“The Office has since taken steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law and the attempted arrest today represents one of the lawful steps,” EOCO stated.
Arrest attempt unsuccessful
The Office explained that the situation escalated during the attempted arrest, forcing its officers to abandon the operation.
“During today’s attempted arrest, the situation escalated and the arrest was not successfully completed as officers assessed that a counter action would have endangered public safety,” EOCO said.
The Office also said it had identified two individuals who, based on the circumstances captured in video footage, allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.
According to EOCO, the conduct of the two individuals is being assessed, after which the Office will take any lawful steps deemed appropriate.
Parliament sanctuary
EOCO further confirmed that Mr Baffour Awuah subsequently proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
The Office said it recognises and respects the constitutional privileges and immunities enjoyed by Members of Parliament.
It assured that its operations would be conducted strictly within the Constitution and applicable laws.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” EOCO stated.
“At the same time, EOCO will not take any step that is inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or any other protection provided by the Constitution.”
Investigation ongoing
EOCO said the investigation remains active and that it will carefully review the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s incident, including available video evidence, to determine its next steps.
The Office reaffirmed its commitment to discharging its statutory responsibilities while respecting the Constitution, the rule of law and the institutional privileges of Parliament.
