The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of weak leadership and inaction over recent drug trafficking cases involving Ghana.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, September 22, Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said every official in the chain of command is to blame and not just a handful of individuals.
He called for those responsible to be removed from office.
“It is every official in the chain of command who has failed this country badly. Every chain. That was our thinking,” he said.
His comments follow a September 17 meeting President Mahama held with security and port-sector agencies to review the cases.
The President was told 10 people, including four Customs Division officers, were being held while investigations continued, and he directed an inter-agency task force to strengthen controls against narcotics trafficking.
But the NPP Organiser said that falls short, arguing that the number of recent cases has embarrassed Ghana on the international stage.
“God, this is a huge international embarrassment. You have, in just four days, close to about five illicit drug-related matters,” he said.
He said the security meeting was no substitute for action and that some officials should have already lost their jobs.
“And all the President can do is to call for a team meeting at the Jubilee House and then just instruct people that make sure that you tighten the work you are doing. They must be sacked. They have relaxed on their duties. They must be sacked. Yet the President calls for a meeting. Nothing happens,” he said.
“Close to about nine officials should have been sacked by now. Yet the President is pampering them,” he added.
He accused the President of talking tough without following through.
“We voted for leadership, not weak leadership. What His Excellency the President is exhibiting is weak leadership. Which leadership? His Excellency the President spoke tough. He was going to crack the whip today. He cannot crack the whip,” he said.
