The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned that Heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools who turn away duly admitted students over the type of trunk or chop box they bring could face disciplinary action.
In a directive addressed to Regional Directors on September 18, 2026, GES said any Head who flouts the instruction will be dealt with under the Service’s applicable standards, regulations and laws.
The Regional Directors have been asked to inform all Heads of Schools to stop turning away, refusing admission to or denying accommodation to duly admitted students solely because of the trunk, chop box or other personal storage container they bring to school.
GES said it issued the directive after receiving reports that some schools were refusing to accommodate newly admitted students who arrived with metal trunks, wooden chop boxes or other containers.
The Service said such practices may “impose unnecessary financial burdens on parents and guardians” who cannot afford the alternative containers individual schools prescribe.
It says all students admitted to boarding accommodation should be treated fairly and accommodated regardless of their economic circumstances or their parents’ ability to buy particular brands or types of personal effects.
The directive has one condition. The container must be reasonably sized and safe, and must not endanger the health, safety or welfare of other students.
GES has also asked that every reported case of a duly admitted student being turned away or denied accommodation solely over a storage container be investigated and reported to Management.
