Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called for stronger policies, reliable industry data, effective institutions and robust intellectual property protection to help Ghana’s creative sector reach its full economic potential.
She made the call at a Creative Industry Reception, where key stakeholders discussed ways to strengthen the sector and create an environment that allows creative businesses and professionals to thrive.
According to the Minister, Ghana’s creative industry must move beyond calls for recognition and support and build the systems and evidence needed to demonstrate its contribution to job creation, incomes and national economic growth.
She also stressed the need for greater integration of tourism, culture and the creative arts, noting that the three areas could work together to unlock new opportunities for Ghana.
Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, also highlighted the importance of intellectual property protection in creating a sustainable creative economy.
He called for creatives to have a stronger voice in the management of their rights and royalties, while pointing to Ghana’s music, film, fashion, festivals and cultural heritage as valuable assets that can support tourism and economic development.
The reception brought together stakeholders from the creative industry, government and development sector to deliberate on policy, investment, intellectual property, industry data and stronger collaboration.
The discussions underscored the need for Ghana to complement its creative talent with systems and institutions capable of supporting sustainable growth, protecting creators and turning creative output into greater economic opportunities.
