Highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has attributed some of the struggles and destructive behaviours people experience to weaknesses in their spiritual lives.
According to the musician, one of the signs of spiritual setbacks can be seen when situations do not go according to plan and individuals begin to feel helpless or overwhelmed by circumstances.
In his view, such moments can also serve as a reminder of God’s supremacy and omnipotence, calling on people to reflect on their spiritual lives rather than allowing difficult situations to completely derail them.
However, Ofori Amponsah believes that people who are not spiritually grounded may struggle to navigate such periods and can resort to substances such as alcohol and cigarettes as a way of coping.
He noted that, in some cases, substance use may not necessarily be the root problem, but rather a symptom of deeper issues such as depression, disappointment or frustration.
Ofori Amponsah, who spoke about the subject while discussing the spiritual side of musicians, said artists need to recognise that they have a calling and should understand the purpose behind their work.
He also disagreed with the tendency to divide music into “secular” and religious categories, insisting that “music is music” and that musicians can still maintain a strong spiritual foundation regardless of the type of music they perform.
For him, having a spiritual foundation is particularly important for musicians because of the pressures and uncertainties that come with the profession.
Ofori Amponsah therefore encouraged musicians to pay greater attention to their spiritual lives and remain grounded in their faith as they navigate the challenges that come with their careers.
