Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kyerematen, says the continued attention he receives from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demonstrates that he remains relevant to the party’s political fortunes.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Kyerematen said the NPP’s interest in his activities should not be interpreted as an indication that he intends to return to the party.
“I gave my reasons for leaving the party, and it seems people still have their eyes on me, which means the relevance is there,” he said.
He said the NPP’s continued focus on him is instead linked to the political alternative he has established and the values he believes are missing from the party.
According to Mr Kyerematen, his decision to establish a new political platform was driven by his belief that some of the traditions and values historically associated with the NPP need to be restored.
“The reason NPP hasn’t forgotten about me is not that I am coming back. But the fact that I said I am starting something new, and they expect that the UP traditions I said are missing will be fundamental, and that would bring them back,” he noted.
Mr Kyerematen was a founding member of the NPP and served as Minister of Trade and Industry before leaving the party in September 2023.
He subsequently contested the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change, which was later reorganised into the United Party after its registration by the Electoral Commission.
His departure from the NPP followed his withdrawal from the party’s 2023 presidential primary process, citing concerns about the conduct of the special delegates’ conference and the treatment of his supporters.
Mr Kyerematen has since positioned the UP as an alternative political force beyond the established NPP-NDC political order.
