Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a rise in the dam’s water level.
According to the company, the water level has reached 45.2 feet due to heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
GWL said the level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, prompting the decision to resume spillage as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.
The company has urged all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate the area ahead of the spillage.
Residents have also been advised to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders have been urged to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for possible evacuation.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
GWL said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates.
“The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” the company said.
