Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents living around the Weija Dam following the emergence of a changfan in the dam, with residents calling on authorities to explain its presence and purpose.
According to the residents, the dredging machine has been operating in the dam for more than two weeks, yet they say they have no information about who brought it there or the nature of the work it is undertaking.
The development has raised concerns among residents, particularly because they are unable to determine whether the machine is being used for legitimate dredging and desilting to help prevent flooding or for illegal mining activities.
Residents say they are awaiting an explanation from the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Felix Odartey-Lamptey, on the matter.
A report by Accra-based UTV revealed that some chiefs in the area have also expressed concern, saying they were not informed about the presence of the changfan and have no knowledge of who authorised its operation.
Residents similarly say they have not received any official explanation, despite the machine having operated in the dam for several weeks.
The uncertainty has heightened concerns in the community, with residents demanding clarity from the authorities about the purpose of the machine and whether its activities pose any threat to the dam, surrounding communities or the environment.
