New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman aspirant John Boadu has denied claims that he was a member of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s so-called “kitchen cabinet” during his tenure in office.
Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr Boadu said his long-standing association with Nana Akufo-Addo had often been misinterpreted as evidence that he belonged to the former President’s inner circle.
He explained that between 2002 and 2020, he consistently held various positions within the NPP, making his support for Akufo-Addo during his presidential campaigns part of his official responsibilities within the party.
Mr Boadu recalled that during the 2008 presidential election, when Nana Akufo-Addo was the NPP’s presidential candidate, he was serving as the party’s National Youth Organiser.
He said he also served as Deputy Communications Director when Akufo-Addo contested the 2012 presidential election.
“I have more than that. I have sat in the party office from 2002 to 2020, and no one has seen me openly, whether during presidential primaries, going out to support someone.
“I happened to always be in a position like President Akufo-Addo going for the presidential election in 2008. I was then the National Youth Organizer, so whose job am I going to do? When he was contesting for 2012, I was then Deputy Communications Director. Whose job am I going to do?” he said.
Mr Boadu stressed that although he has always been associated with Akufo-Addo, he was never part of the former President’s kitchen cabinet.
“I have always been associated with Akufo-Addo. I haven’t been to Akufo-Addo’s kitchen cabinet meetings before. I have never been part of them,” he said.
The former NPP General Secretary also questioned why he was not appointed to a position in the Akufo-Addo administration if he had truly been considered part of the former President’s inner circle.
He noted that after losing his bid for the NPP General Secretary position, he could reasonably have expected an appointment if he had been regarded as a member of Akufo-Addo’s close circle.
“Clearly, if I was to be part of his kitchen cabinet, like I would be given a position after losing my General Secretary bid, wouldn’t he have liked to give me a position?” he asked.
Mr Boadu is currently contesting to become the next National Chairman of the NPP.
