Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract.
The 33-year-old, who played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar, arrives at Stamford Bridge after six seasons at Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout goalkeepers.
“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martínez told Chelsea’s official website.
“Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon. I can’t wait to get started.
“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do, and I want to bring that here because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”
The Argentine also pledged to give “100 per cent every game” as he looks to help Chelsea compete for silverware.
Martínez began his career in the youth ranks of Argentine club Independiente before joining Arsenal as a 17-year-old in 2010.
After several loan spells, he broke into Arsenal’s first team during the closing stages of the 2019-20 season, helping the Gunners lift the FA Cup before adding the Community Shield at the start of the following campaign.
He joined Aston Villa in September 2020 and became a cornerstone of the club’s resurgence under successive managers.
During his time at Villa Park, Martínez made 256 appearances and helped the club secure the UEFA Europa League title in May.
On the international stage, Martínez has been Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper since making his debut in 2021.
He has earned 67 caps and played a decisive role in an era of unprecedented success for the national team, winning back-to-back Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 before helping Argentina claim the World Cup in 2022.
His performances earned him the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world’s best goalkeeper, in both 2023 and 2024.
