Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid tribute to veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey, describing her as a trailblazer and an influential figure in Ghana’s creative arts industry.
Dr Bawumia said the late actress had a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, entertaining generations of Ghanaians while inspiring young women pursuing careers in the creative arts.
In a tribute shared on Facebook, Dr Bawumia and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, extended their condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late actress.
“Hajia Samira and I extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and the entire creative arts fraternity. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” he wrote.
Grace Nortey passed away at the age of 89 in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
She was born on February 1, 1937, and built a distinguished career in Ghana’s film and theatre industry, leaving a lasting mark on the country’s creative arts landscape.
Her death marks the end of a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, during which she became one of the most recognisable faces in Ghanaian theatre, television and film.
She was particularly known for her commanding performances, often portraying outspoken, strong-willed and determined women.
Among the notable productions in which she featured were Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Nana Akoto, Escape to Love, Ties That Bind and Sinking Sands, in which she played the role of Grandma.
Nortey also featured in the internationally acclaimed 2015 film Beasts of No Nation, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba and Abraham Attah. In the Ghana-shot film, she portrayed the Old Witch Woman.
Her contribution to Ghana’s entertainment industry has earned her a lasting place among the country’s celebrated veteran actors.
