Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken legal action against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over comments he considers false and defamatory.
The Effutu Member of Parliament disclosed the lawsuit on Monday, August 24, 2026, as Parliament resumed sitting following weeks of public exchanges between the two over GoldBod’s operations and reported financial losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The disagreement intensified after Mr Gyamfi allegedly described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” in response to Mr Afenyo-Markin’s criticism of the programme and his demands for answers over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025.
Speaking in Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had instructed his lawyers to commence legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi as well as media organisations that carried the statements at the centre of the dispute.
He cited two cases filed at the courts.
According to him, one of the suits, numbered GT/1029/2026, is titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited and has been filed at the Accra High Court.
The second case, numbered GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, is against Eric Adjei and Peace FM and was filed at the Achimota Circuit Court.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he was confident that the courts would assess the evidence and applicable law and arrive at an appropriate determination.
The lawsuit follows a prolonged public disagreement over the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the circumstances surrounding the reported losses.
The Minority Leader has consistently called on the government and GoldBod to provide detailed explanations concerning the reported US$1.7 billion loss.
Mr Gyamfi, however, has rejected claims that GoldBod was responsible for the reported loss and has defended the statements he made against Mr Afenyo-Markin.
The GoldBod CEO has indicated that he is prepared to defend his position and the allegations in court.
