Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin says New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed confidence in his leadership and urged the Minority Caucus to remain focused on the alleged $1.7 billion loss linked to the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed this in a post on X following a meeting with Dr Bawumia at his private residence in Accra ahead of Parliament’s emergency sitting.
According to him, the meeting focused on party matters and the agenda of the Minority as Parliament reconvenes.
“I held a meeting this morning with the Flag-Bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at his private residence in Accra,” he said.
He said the two also discussed issues the Minority intends to raise during the emergency sitting convened by the Speaker of Parliament.
“We discussed party matters and the agenda before the Minority as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting called by the Speaker,” he added.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia reaffirmed his confidence in his leadership of the Minority.
“Dr Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority,” he stated.
According to the Minority Leader, Dr Bawumia also urged the Caucus to maintain its focus on the alleged loss of more than $1.7 billion, which he said was equivalent to 1.5% of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia cautioned the Minority against being distracted from the matter.
“He cautioned me against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from it,” he added.
The NPP flagbearer, according to Mr Afenyo-Markin, also encouraged the Minority to use parliamentary procedures to demand accountability from the government.
“He called on the Minority, under my leadership, to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said Dr Bawumia commended the Minority for its efforts in pursuing the matter so far.
“He commended the Minority for its efforts so far,” he stated.
The Minority Leader pledged that the Caucus would continue to pursue the matter in what he described as the national interest.
“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
He added that the alleged loss remains firmly on the Minority’s parliamentary agenda as the House resumes.
“I further informed him that this colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes today,” he stated.
Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority would continue pressing for answers and accountability.
“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” he said.
