The campaign team of incarcerated New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has picked up nomination forms on his behalf to enable him continue his bid for the party’s top position.
In a statement, the campaign team said the forms were obtained to formally complete the nomination process and expressed appreciation to supporters for their continued backing.
“The Wontumi Campaign Team has today successfully picked up the nomination forms on behalf of Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi). This is simply to formally complete the nomination process on his behalf. With God and the people behind us, we move. Your support, prayers and dedication are what keep us going. Thank you all for your continued support and commitment,” the statement said.
The development was also confirmed by the Communications Director of the campaign team, Ewuradwoa Coleman.
“Yes indeed, the campaign team has picked up forms on behalf of Chairman Wontumi. We are continuing his bid in the National Chairmanship race,” she told Joy News.
The move comes despite Mr Boasiako’s current incarceration and an ongoing legal challenge against his conviction and sentence.
His lawyers have filed an application seeking bail pending the determination of his appeal.
Wontumi is serving a 20-year prison sentence after an Accra High Court convicted him on charges related to illegal mining activities at the Samreboi concession in the Western Region.
The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, found him guilty of offences including assigning mineral rights without the required ministerial approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations.
The sentences imposed on the various counts are running concurrently, resulting in an effective 20-year prison term.
Despite his imprisonment, the campaign team says it remains committed to pursuing his candidacy in the NPP National Chairman race.
