Ghana Hydrological Authority has announced major drainage construction works along the Accra Academy–Mpamprom–First Light corridor as part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project.
Head of Drainage at the authority, Richard Amekor, said the project is expected to involve the construction of a major drainage channel measuring about 10 metres wide. He explained that the works are intended to reduce flooding and prevent casualties in flood-prone areas.
According to Mr. Amekor, the Kaneshie Road will be closed entirely at sections where the drainage construction is being undertaken. The authority is currently engaging key stakeholders, including the National Security, the Department of Urban Roads, market representatives and traditional leaders, ahead of the construction.
He said the project was initially scheduled to begin in May or June, but the start was postponed because of the rainy season. Construction is now expected to commence in August 2026.
Mr. Amekor explained that one contractor will undertake works from Accra Academy through Mpamprom, which is expected to result in a road blockage at Mpamprom. From Mpamprom to First Light, however, motorists will be provided with a road diversion to help ease congestion and minimise disruption to traffic.
He also disclosed that the authority is preparing to relocate a Ghana Water Company water line along the Korle Bu Road to make way for the construction of another drainage channel. Excavation works for that section are expected to begin soon.
Meanwhile, Mr. Amekor said discussions are ongoing regarding the construction of the Kaneshie footbridge. He noted that stakeholders are currently engaged in deliberations on the project and further details will be communicated as the discussions progress.
The authorities are urging motorists, commuters, businesses and residents within the affected areas to cooperate with the construction teams and follow designated diversions when the works commence.
