Atewa East Member of Parliament and Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to order a thorough investigation into reported financial losses incurred by the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD).
According to the former Deputy Finance Minister, the reported losses require closer scrutiny to determine how they occurred and whether adequate measures were taken to protect public funds.
Her call follows reports of a $1.7 billion loss reportedly attributed to GOLDBOD by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Osei-Asare believes the matter must be subjected to detailed examination by the government and relevant state institutions to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported losses.
She further highlighted the potential opportunity cost of the funds involved, arguing that some of the reported losses could have been channelled into areas that would directly benefit Ghanaians.
She cited the health sector, claiming that GH¢6 billion could have been used to recruit unemployed nurses.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, August 11, the Atewa East MP also urged President Mahama to fulfil his previous commitment to reviewing the performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), particularly those that are struggling or failing to generate sufficient returns.
“President Mahama, we are asking you to call for proper and further investigations into what is happening at GOLDBOD. I am temporarily relieved that at least the Bank of Ghana from 1st of July, 2026 is no more spending on GOLDBOD as it used to be.
“President Mahama, somewhere last year, you engaged SOEs and then you mentioned that SOEs that are not making profits or SOEs that are not thriving, you either close them down or you merge them, so we want you to walk the talk. Look into GOLDBOD.”
She said a comprehensive review of GOLDBOD’s operations would help establish the extent of the reported financial challenges and ensure accountability in the management of public resources.
