The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has given the government a two-week ultimatum to implement the 20% deprived-area allowance for teachers or face industrial action.
The Association had earlier threatened to embark on industrial action at the end of July 2026 over the unpaid allowance but suspended the move following interventions by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
However, PRETAG says it can no longer wait indefinitely for the government to address the issue.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Association’s National Executive Council meeting in Koforidua on Monday, August 10, 2026, National President King Ali Awudu said the government has until the end of August to resolve the matter.
“We first gave the deadline of the end of July. The Ghana Education Service and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission intervened, and we decided to suspend the July ultimatum,” he explained.
He said the Association has now extended the deadline by another two weeks to give the government an opportunity to address its concerns.
The 20% deprived-area allowance is intended to incentivise teachers working in underserved communities and help improve teacher retention and staffing in schools located in deprived areas.
PRETAG is also demanding the implementation of the promotion structure for qualified teachers from Deputy Director to Director II and subsequently to Director I.
Mr Awudu appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the promotion structure is implemented, describing it as a commitment made by the government during the 2024 election campaign.
He warned that failure to address the outstanding issues within the latest deadline could result in a series of industrial actions by members of the Association.
PRETAG’s latest ultimatum comes amid concerns over teacher motivation, retention and the difficulty of attracting qualified teachers to underserved communities.
