Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has declared that he would be a formidable candidate in any free and fair election in Nigeria, including a presidential contest.
The singer, however, says he has no immediate plans to enter politics, citing concerns about the transparency of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Davido made the comments during a recent livestream with Nigerian streamer Carter Efe, where the conversation turned to whether he would consider seeking political office, including becoming a state governor.
According to the singer, the current electoral environment does not give him enough confidence to pursue a political career. He said he would rather remain focused on his music until he is convinced that elections in Nigeria can be conducted transparently.
Despite his reservations, Davido expressed strong confidence in his ability to win if the electoral process is genuinely free and fair.
He argued that his popularity, influence and connection with Nigerians would give him a strong advantage in a transparent contest, going as far as saying he could win the presidency.
Davido has previously been vocal about political and social issues in Nigeria and has participated in public discussions around governance and elections.
His latest comments come ahead of the Osun State gubernatorial election, a contest he is closely watching as a native of Osun State.
For now, the singer appears content to keep his political ambitions on hold, choosing to concentrate on his music career while waiting for what he considers a more credible electoral environment.
Whether Davido eventually makes the jump from the stage to the political arena remains uncertain, but his latest declaration has once again placed his name in Nigeria’s political conversation.
