The Queen Mother of the Mepe Traditional Area in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV, has appealed to the government to compensate residents who suffered devastating losses during the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News Correspondent Odehyeba Owusu Job during the 2026 70th celebration of the Mepe Afenotor Festival by the chiefs and people of Mepe, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV said no affected resident had yet received full compensation for the losses suffered during the disaster.
She said victims lost their homes, businesses and sources of livelihood and were still struggling to recover from the impact of the floods.
The Queen Mother acknowledged efforts by the previous and current governments to provide housing and other interventions for affected communities but appealed for the projects to be completed without further delay.
Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV said completing the housing projects would provide shelter for residents who lost their homes, while financial assistance would enable those whose businesses were destroyed to restart their livelihoods.
The Queen Mother also commended the Minister of Roads and Highways for including Mepe in the government’s Big Push infrastructure projects.
She, however, called for the projects to be expedited to improve access into and out of the community.
She further appealed to the government to reconstruct all internal roads in Mepe as part of measures to compensate the community for the devastating effects of the dam spillage.
The Queen Mother also called for a temporary waiver of electricity bills for residents of Mepe as part of the compensation package.
She argued that the community had suffered displacement and delays in development since the construction of the Akosombo Dam, noting that it took several years for Mepe to gain access to electricity.
She said it was therefore unfair for residents affected by the 2023 floods to immediately face electricity bills without adequate compensation for their losses.
She appealed to the people of Mepe to remain united and continue engaging the government and relevant authorities on the outstanding needs of the community following the devastating floods.
