Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai says the Attorney-General’s Office is working with authorities in the United States to pursue other individuals allegedly linked to a bribery scheme involving a power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the Government of Ghana.
His comments follow the conviction of Ghanaian businessman and former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director, Asante Kwaku Berko, by a US federal jury in Brooklyn, New York.
In a social media post, Justice Srem-Sai said the Attorney-General’s Office was collaborating with its US counterparts to ensure that other persons implicated in the alleged scheme are brought to justice.
“The Honourable Attorney-General is working with his United States counterparts to bring to book persons who are implicated in the bribery scheme related to the 2014–2017 power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the Government,” he stated.
Justice Srem-Sai said the renewed efforts come after Berko was convicted on charges connected to the alleged bribery scheme.
“This follows ASANTE KWAKU BERKO’s conviction by a United States federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, on charges of conspiracy to violate the United States’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other related laws,” he added.
The conviction has brought fresh attention to the power plant contract, which was developed between 2014 and 2017, and allegations of corruption surrounding the deal.
However, Justice Srem-Sai did not disclose the identities of the other individuals being pursued or provide details about the specific actions being taken by Ghanaian and US authorities.
The development signals continued efforts by the two countries to investigate alleged corruption linked to the contract and hold all persons found to have been involved accountable.
