The annual Homowo Festival begun with a colourful procession of chiefs through the forts and main streets, accompanied by the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi, as the Ga State celebrates its rich cultural heritage and triumph over hunger.
The ceremony brought together traditional leaders, residents and visitors who gathered to witness the historic ritual, marked by traditional music, dancing and other cultural displays.
Present at the celebration was His Royal Majesty (HRM), King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who joined fellow chiefs and members of the Ga community for the traditional observances.
The sprinkling of Kpokpoi is a significant ritual in the Homowo celebration and symbolises the Ga people’s remembrance of their ancestors and their triumph over a historic period of famine.
The Homowo Festival, which means “hooting at hunger,” remains one of the most important cultural celebrations of the Ga people, providing an opportunity to preserve their traditions, strengthen communal bonds and promote Ga heritage.
