Investigative journalist and coordinator of the civil society-led Pledge Against Corruption campaign, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request to the Judicial Service seeking details on the timeline of Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu’s appeal process.
The request follows the acquittal and discharge of the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) by the Court of Appeal on July 30, 2026.
Sedina Tamakloe, who headed MASLOC from November 2013 to January 2017, was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison by the High Court (Financial Crimes Division) on April 16, 2024, after a trial in absentia.
She had failed to return to Ghana after being granted permission by the court to travel to the United States for medical treatment.
She was convicted on charges including conspiracy to steal, stealing, conspiracy to willfully cause financial loss to the state, willfully causing financial loss to the state, causing loss to public property, improper payment of public funds, money laundering, unauthorised commitment resulting in financial obligation for the government and contravention of the Public Procurement Act.
Court records indicate that Sedina Tamakloe filed an appeal against her conviction on May 9, 2024, while she was still outside Ghana. The Court of Appeal later acquitted and discharged her after she was repatriated from the United States in June 2026 to serve her sentence.
Although the Court of Appeal’s decision has been described by many as sound, questions have emerged over the timeline of the appeal, particularly claims that the Attorney-General’s Office was only notified about the case in February 2026, despite the appeal reportedly being filed in May 2024.
Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, who served from 2021 to January 2025, stated in a press release that he was unaware of the appeal before leaving office.
Mr Awuni’s RTI request seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding the timeline of the appeal and address concerns over the delay in notifying the Attorney-General’s Office.
Among the information requested from the Judicial Service are the date and time the case, Suit Number H2/17/2026 (Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu vs The Republic), was filed, including copies of the relevant court processes.
He is also requesting evidence showing when the appeal was served on the Office of the Attorney-General, receipts of payments made in relation to the case, details from the court’s Case Registration Book, and the suit’s BP number.
The journalist further requested an explanation if it is confirmed that the Attorney-General’s Office was not notified of the appeal until February 2026, including whether such a delay is a normal practice or an exception.
According to Mr Awuni, the RTI request, submitted to the Judicial Service on August 5, 2026, forms part of his commitment to promoting transparency and accountability.
He said the information would help deepen public trust in the judiciary.
