Two young girls narrowly escaped tragedy after they became trapped in a fire that swept through the family house of the late Tamale Central MP, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, at Dohinna Yili in Tamale.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in a latest briefing, firefighters from the Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station rescued the girls from one of the rooms engulfed by the blaze before bringing the fire under control.
The Service said it received a distress call at 3:29 p.m. reporting a fire outbreak at the 17-room compound house. A seven-member firefighting crew was dispatched a minute later and arrived at the scene within seven minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the two girls were trapped inside one of the burning rooms. The crew immediately launched simultaneous rescue and firefighting operations to save the children while preventing the flames from spreading further.
The girls were successfully rescued unharmed and were reported to be in good health.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control at 5:56 p.m. before completely extinguishing it at 6:07 p.m.
The fire severely damaged nine of the 17 rooms, while eight rooms and their contents were salvaged through the swift intervention of the firefighters.
No fatalities or injuries were recorded.
The Ghana National Fire Service has commenced investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
