The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has issued Ghana’s first licences for the legal cultivation of cannabis, marking a significant milestone in the country’s emerging industrial cannabis sector.
The licences were awarded to MG Adom Limited and Juliopta Limited after the two companies successfully met all the legal and regulatory requirements set out under Ghana’s cannabis cultivation framework.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Director-General of NACOC, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, urged the companies to adhere strictly to the conditions governing their operations.
He explained that the licences authorise the cultivation of cannabis solely for approved industrial, medicinal and scientific research purposes.
According to him, the companies are only permitted to cultivate cannabis with a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content not exceeding 0.3 per cent, in accordance with Ghana’s laws. THC is the psychoactive substance responsible for the intoxicating effects of cannabis.
Major General Obuba Mantey stressed that recreational cannabis remains illegal in Ghana and warned that anyone cultivating cannabis without a valid licence or producing cannabis with THC levels above the legal limit would be prosecuted.
He noted that the regulated cannabis industry has the potential to generate employment, particularly for young people, while supporting scientific research, innovation and the production of medicinal cannabis products.
The Director-General urged the two licensed companies to operate responsibly and comply fully with the country’s regulatory standards to help build a credible and sustainable cannabis industry in Ghana.
