Team Ghana heads into another decisive day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with hopes of adding to its medal tally, as sprint star Joseph Paul Amoah competes in the Men’s 200 metres final and boxer Amadu Mohammed steps into the Men’s 55kg semi-final.
Following Zinabu Issah’s historic silver medal in the Women’s Para Shot Put T57, Ghana has already opened its account at the Games and will be seeking further podium success across athletics, boxing, cycling and judo.
Leading Ghana’s delegation, President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Ghana and President of the African Paralympic Committee, Samson Deen, has praised the determination and fighting spirit of Team Ghana throughout the Games, urging all athletes to compete with confidence, discipline and national pride.
“Our athletes have demonstrated courage, resilience and excellence throughout these Games. Every Ghanaian is proud of what they have achieved so far, and we remain confident that more memorable performances and medals are within reach. Continue to believe, compete fearlessly and make Ghana proud,” Samson Deen said.
According to today’s competition schedule, Erica Sedzro opens Ghana’s programme in the Women’s Sprint cycling event at 10:00 GMT, while Frema Adjei competes in the Women’s 57kg judo competition at 12:00 GMT. Cyclist Shaaban Mohammed will contest both the Men’s 4000m event at 12:29 GMT and the Men’s Keirin at 16:00 GMT.
Attention will then turn to the boxing ring where Amadu Mohammed takes on the Men’s 55kg semi-final at 15:30 GMT, before the day’s climax arrives on the athletics track when Joseph Paul Amoah lines up in the Men’s 200 metres final at 21:25 GMT.
Amoah carries Ghana’s strongest athletics medal hopes after an outstanding championship campaign. The national record holder secured his place in the final after winning his opening heat in 20.36 seconds, advancing confidently against a highly competitive field.
The Ghanaian sprinter enters the final with a personal best, season’s best and national record of 19.99 seconds, making him one of the fastest athletes in the competition. A performance close to that mark would place him firmly in contention for a Commonwealth medal.
With years of international experience, Amoah has consistently proven his ability to perform under pressure. Championship finals are often decided by the smallest margins, but his speed, composure and race management provide genuine optimism that Ghana could celebrate another athletics podium finish.
In the boxing arena, Amadu Mohammed stands just one victory away from contesting for Commonwealth gold. Having progressed to the Men’s 55kg semi-final, he has placed himself in an excellent position to secure another medal for Ghana.
Under Commonwealth Games boxing regulations, both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals, meaning today’s contest represents one of Ghana’s strongest medal opportunities. Victory would guarantee Mohammed at least a silver medal while earning him a place in the championship final with the chance to win gold.
Success in the ring will depend on disciplined tactics, sharp movement, effective defence and accurate scoring punches throughout the bout. His performances so far have demonstrated the confidence and technical quality needed to challenge the very best in the division.
