Ghanaian sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah has qualified for the men’s 200m final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after producing an outstanding performance in the semi-finals on Thursday, July 30.
Competing in the second semi-final, Amoah displayed his experience and composure, executing an excellent bend before powering down the home straight to claim victory in a season’s best time of 20.24 seconds.
The 29-year-old edged Jamaica’s Jevaughn Powell in a thrilling finish, with both athletes officially clocked at 20.24 seconds. Amoah, however, crossed the line just 0.002 seconds ahead of his rival to secure one of the two automatic qualification places for the final.
While Amoah booked his place in the medal race, Ghana’s other two representatives were unable to progress. James Dadzie finished fourth in the opening semi-final in 20.52 seconds, narrowly missing out on qualification, while Mustapha Bokpin placed seventh in the third semi-final after posting a time of 20.65 seconds.
Amoah has been one of the standout performers in the event, having also won his opening-round heat in 20.36 seconds.
The Ghanaian national record holder has shown impressive consistency throughout the competition and heads into the final as one of the favourites to challenge for gold.
The upcoming final presents Amoah with an opportunity to better his bronze-medal performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Ghana will now be looking to its sprint star to deliver another memorable performance and potentially secure the country’s first athletics gold medal of the Games.
