Ghana and Gabon have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing diplomatic engagement and institutional cooperation between the two countries.
The agreements were signed on Tuesday, July 28, following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and his Gabonese counterpart, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The meeting, which followed a private tête-à -tête between the two leaders, focused on expanding cooperation across key sectors and reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the two West African nations.
President Mahama and President Oligui Nguema expressed satisfaction with the cordial relations that have existed between Ghana and Gabon over the years and pledged to translate their strong political ties into tangible economic partnerships.
The two leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration in trade, investment and private sector development while taking advantage of opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to boost intra-African trade and regional integration.
They also identified several priority areas for cooperation, including mining and mineral value addition, oil and gas, energy, agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry and climate action, maritime affairs, education, digital transformation, health, tourism, as well as defence and security.
To facilitate the implementation of these initiatives, the Presidents directed the relevant ministries and state institutions in both countries to develop practical frameworks for collaboration.
The bilateral meeting concluded with the signing of two agreements. The first was a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the Government of Ghana and the Government of the Gabonese Republic, while the second focused on cooperation in diplomatic training between Ghana’s Foreign Service Institute and Gabon’s Institute of Diplomatic Studies.
The two governments said the agreements are expected to strengthen institutional partnerships, enhance diplomatic cooperation and create new opportunities for collaboration across strategic sectors.
As part of his official visit, President Oligui Nguema also planted a commemorative tree in the Jubilee House gardens to symbolise the growing friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Gabon.
