Former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo has alleged that the recent tension with her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, followed the opening of their late father’s will, claiming he was disappointed after discovering some properties were not allocated as expected.
“He went to open the will and saw what he did not want to see, and now he is trying hard to tarnish my image,” she alleged.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM, monitored by Adomonline.com, the former lawmaker denied allegations that she demanded GH¢3.7 million from the Kantanka family before the burial of her father, Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
She described the claim as false and an attempt to damage her reputation, insisting she had only recently arrived in Ghana and was not involved in discussions surrounding the funeral arrangements when the allegations emerged.
She said she was shocked by the accusations and recalled previous claims that she was withholding her father’s remains.
“If you are playing with a liar and a wicked person, you are playing with fire. My father always told me that if you are eating with such people, you give them a long fork so you eat with them from a distance,” she said.
Adwoa Safo said she was not in Ghana when the accusations surfaced, explaining that a letter from her brother’s lawyers to her lawyers indicated the family wanted to discuss arrangements for the funeral after the late Apostle’s will had been opened.
“When you look at the date on their letter, I was not even in the country. They wrote through their lawyers that the will had been opened and they needed the eldest sibling so we could meet and see how to go about the burial,” she said.
She said the family only wanted to meet to determine the way forward and assess how the funeral arrangements would be handled.
According to her, a funeral planning committee had already been constituted, made up of family members, church representatives and other stakeholders. She said she was not a member of the committee because not all siblings could serve on it.
She further accused Akofena of misleading the public after allegedly soliciting funds from members of the church, claiming her brother and church elders had visited more than 148 branches established by their father to raise money for the funeral.
“He has gone to the church members to solicit money from them and they have all paid. They have put it in their coffers that they want to use it for the funeral. I have not asked anyone for that money,” she said.
Adwoa Safo said the allegations would not stop her from giving her father a befitting burial.
“I am his first child, and he gave me the best education. He paid my fees in the US and the UK. I will show him that I love him and give him the burial he deserves,” she added.
