Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says Ghana are determined to go all the way and win the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana’s senior women’s national team will begin their continental campaign on Wednesday against tournament debutants Cape Verde at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
Ahead of their Group A opener, the Swedish tactician outlined the team’s objectives for the competition, stressing that qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and winning the WAFCON title remain their ultimate targets.
“We have three targets: qualify from the group stage, win the quarter-finals to qualify for the World Cup and go all the way to win the 2026 WAFCON,” Björkegren told the media on Tuesday.
The Black Queens head into the tournament with renewed confidence following weeks of intensive preparations in Morocco.
The team ended their pre-tournament activities with an impressive 4-0 victory over Malawi in a friendly match, a result that has boosted morale ahead of their opening fixture.
Ghana finished third at the last edition of the WAFCON and are hoping to build on that performance by mounting a serious challenge for their first-ever continental title.
Björkegren believes the team has made significant progress since he took charge and is confident they can compete among the best teams in Africa.
“We were happy with the bronze medal in the previous WAFCON. I think we did really well. When I came in, I took over a team that normally hadn’t performed really well in a long time,” he said.
After their opening match against Cape Verde, the Black Queens will face Cameroon on Saturday, August 2, before wrapping up their group-stage campaign against Mali on August 6.
The four teams that reach the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFCON will earn qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
