Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has emphatically said they are aiming at securing qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
Ghana’s senior female national team are currently in Morocco preparing for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener on Wednesday evening.
The Queens will face debutant side Cape Verde at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
Speaking ahead of the match, Bjorkegren reflected on their journey since winning bronze at the previous editions, expressing delight in the growth of his players.
“We were happy with the bronze medal in the previous WAFCON, and we have improved over the year, having played elite opponents. We beat Russia, and we played well against England in December even though we lost,” the Swedish trainer said.
Bjorkegren further revealed that their objective at the tournament is to secure qualification for the Women’s World Cup to be held in Brazil next year.
“We have three targets; one is to qualify out of the group, the second, which is important, is to reach the semis to qualify for the World Cup, and if we make that, then we have to go all the way to win WAFCON.
“So I have seen everything in three steps, but we will do everything with confidence and respect for our opponents,” he added.
Ghana will later take on Cameroon on Saturday, August 2, before concluding their group fixture against Mali on August 6.
The semifinalists of the WAFCON will make it to the World Cup next year.
