President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to leading Ghana with integrity, compassion and respect for democratic institutions, saying his administration will continue to make decisions that prioritise the welfare of Ghanaians in honour of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to mark the 14th anniversary of President Mills’ passing, President Mahama said the values he learned while serving as Vice President under the late leader continue to shape his approach to governance.
He noted that Professor Mills’ leadership, characterised by humility, integrity and commitment to national unity, remains a source of inspiration in his own leadership journey.
“As I reflect on the responsibilities that the people of Ghana have entrusted on me today, I often recall his quiet wisdom and steady temperament. These values continue to remind me that every decision that I take must ultimately serve the people of Ghana and strengthen the democratic institutions that would outlive us all,” President Mahama said.
The President stressed that the most meaningful way to honour the memory of Professor Mills is not through annual commemorative events alone but by living out the principles he championed.
According to him, integrity in public service, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance of differing opinions, compassion for the vulnerable and inclusive national development are values that should continue to guide the nation.
President Mahama acknowledged that the late President’s vision of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains unfinished, pledging to continue building on that legacy.
“His dream of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains a work in progress. And I pledge to the memory of Professor Mills that I shall continue to walk in the footsteps that he left,” he said.
The wreath-laying ceremony formed part of activities commemorating the 14th anniversary of the passing of President John Evans Atta Mills, who died in office on July 24, 2012.
