The Minority in Parliament has criticised the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, describing it as uninspiring and lacking the detail required to address the concerns of Ghanaians.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin made the remarks on Thursday, July 23, after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson presented the government’s mid-year fiscal policy review to Parliament.
The Effutu MP argued that the Finance Minister’s presentation contained broad claims about government achievements but failed to provide adequate details to support them.
According to him, the review did not offer the level of transparency and accountability expected of a mid-year budget statement, particularly regarding government expenditure and the implementation of key policies.
Afenyo-Markin questioned the government’s claims of having made several payments across different sectors, saying Parliament and the Ghanaian public deserved a detailed breakdown of the expenditures.
“This review is full of English with empty payments. The payments they say they have made, why didn’t they give us the details?” he said.
He further described the budget review as lacking inspiration and accused the government of failing to present practical solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
“Mr. Speaker, this review is uninspiring and there is no inspiration in it. What we are experiencing in this country is persecution. You are persecuting people and you are here telling us you are running an economy,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The Minority Leader also expressed concern about what he described as the prevailing political climate, alleging that some individuals were being persecuted while the government projected an image of sound economic management.
He maintained that the economic gains highlighted in the budget review did not reflect the realities facing many Ghanaians and called on the government to provide greater accountability and more concrete measures to address the country’s challenges.
