The Apremdo Chief, Nana Egya Kwamina XI, has called on advocacy groups and citizens to hold traditional leaders accountable when they engage in activities that undermine the integrity of chieftaincy institutions.
According to him, institutions such as the House of Chiefs have the potential to provide strong leadership and guidance for Ghana if they remain independent of partisan politics.
Nana Egya Kwamina XI made the comments while responding to concerns about chiefs’ involvement in vote buying at the Western Regional edition of Adom Brands’ “Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum held at the Takoradi Library.
The forum brought together citizens and key stakeholders to discuss the growing influence of money in Ghana’s democratic process, including vote buying, campaign financing, the rising cost of political participation and illicit funding in elections.
The chief expressed concern that political involvement has affected some traditional institutions and created divisions among leaders.
“I always say that institutions like the House of Chiefs, without the involvement of politics, will lead us well. However, due to politics, it is dividing them,” he said.
He urged pressure groups and civil society organisations to demand accountability from traditional leaders to help preserve the credibility of chieftaincy institutions.
“So the pressure and advocacy groups should hold the chiefs accountable. With them, Ghana could stand well,” Nana Egya Kwamina XI stated.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about the role of traditional authorities in Ghana’s democratic process and concerns over the influence of money and politics in elections.
The “Democracy Is Not For Sale” forum seeks to promote public dialogue on the impact of vote buying and encourage citizens to demand accountability from political actors and other influential stakeholders.
