The Ministry of Education has called on the Ghana Police Service to intensify efforts to locate and arrest the interdicted Bole Senior High School teacher who remains at large three weeks after a nationwide manhunt was announced.
In a statement issued on July 14, the Ministry expressed concern that the suspect has yet to be apprehended despite the seriousness of the allegations against him and the public interest in the case.
The Ministry said it had taken note of reports suggesting that the fugitive teacher recently granted a media interview in which he claimed the incident involving a female student was unintentional and appealed for a transfer to a village school.
According to the Ministry, the interview should provide the police with useful leads to trace the suspect, insisting that available information indicates the teacher’s conduct was deliberate and intentional, contrary to his claims.
It further disclosed that authorities have come across other videos allegedly showing the same teacher engaging in similar inappropriate behaviour with other girls believed to be students.
“Based on what we know so far, we believe that the now dismissed and interdicted teacher used his privileged position as a teacher to exploit vulnerable female students,” the statement said.
The Ministry reiterated that the alleged conduct at Bole Senior High School was unacceptable, shameful and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the teaching profession.
It also questioned why the suspect had not yet been arrested, despite the Ghana Police Service’s track record in apprehending criminal suspects, and appealed to members of the public with information on his whereabouts to assist the police or contact the Ministry of Education.
The Ministry further expressed concern over the increasing cases of indiscipline involving teachers, headteachers and students across educational institutions, warning that such incidents undermine teaching and learning, weaken public confidence in schools and threaten efforts to build safe and disciplined learning environments.
It said the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take firm and decisive action against all forms of misconduct in pre-tertiary institutions, stressing that breaches of professional and student conduct standards would attract appropriate sanctions under existing laws and regulations.
The Ministry also announced plans to convene a National Dialogue on tackling growing indiscipline in schools, bringing together key stakeholders to develop practical and sustainable measures to address disciplinary challenges within Ghana’s educational system.
