The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II.

In a statement, the Okyenhene described the late Ya-Na as a symbol of peace, unity and statesmanship whose reign helped bring an end to one of the most difficult chapters in the history of Northern Ghana through the resolution of the protracted Dagbon chieftaincy crisis.

According to Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Ya-Na Abukari II demonstrated that dialogue, reconciliation and mutual respect were essential foundations for lasting peace.

“He was the epitome of tolerance, wisdom and compassion,” the statement said, adding that these qualities enabled the late monarch to redefine traditional leadership as a tool for national cohesion and development.

The Okyenhene noted that Ya-Na Abukari II’s influence extended beyond Dagbon, as he worked with traditional authorities across Ghana to promote consensus, unity and harmony among diverse communities.

Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin expressed appreciation for the late Ya-Na’s friendship, engagement and counsel, recalling his acceptance to serve as Special Guest of Honour during celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the Okyenhene’s ascension to the Ofori Panin Stool.

He said on that occasion, the late Dagbon Overlord advocated reforms to the Council of State to ensure greater participation of traditional authorities in national governance.

“His passing is a tremendous loss to Ghana. Okyeman has lost a cherished brother, a respected father figure and a trusted friend,” the statement said.

The Okyenhene extended his condolences to the Royal Family of Dagbon, the various Gates of Dagbon, the chiefs and people of the kingdom, as well as all Ghanaians mourning the loss of the revered traditional ruler.

He urged all stakeholders to uphold the peace, unity and reconciliation that Ya-Na Abukari II championed throughout his life, describing it as the greatest tribute to his memory.

“May the soul of Ya-Na Abukari II rest in perfect peace,” he added.
