Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah is on the brink of completing a move to Bundesliga side FC Köln on a free transfer ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 27-year-old left-back is set to join the German club after attracting interest with his impressive performances for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Mensah became a free agent after his contract with French Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre expired, bringing an end to his four-year stay at the club.

The Ghana international confirmed his departure in an emotional farewell message on social media, expressing gratitude to the club’s players, coaches, staff and supporters for their unwavering support throughout his time in France.

“It has been a real honour to represent this club,” Mensah wrote, adding that he leaves with “a heart filled with gratitude.”

The former Red Bull Salzburg defender was one of Ghana’s standout performers at the World Cup, playing every minute of the Black Stars’ four matches as they progressed to the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia.

Mensah also enjoyed a solid 2025/26 campaign with Auxerre, making 30 Ligue 1 appearances and contributing two assists as the club successfully battled to retain their top-flight status.

He initially joined Auxerre on loan in 2021 before completing a permanent move the following year.

Having successfully completed his mandatory medical examinations in Cologne on Friday, Mensah is now expected to be officially unveiled by FC Köln in the coming days as the club prepares for the new Bundesliga season.
