The Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has partnered with the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to mobilise students for a major community clean-up exercise following the recent devastating floods.
The initiative is aimed at supporting efforts to restore affected communities, improve environmental sanitation and promote responsible waste management.
On Friday, student volunteers, together with SLTF staff, Zoomlion workers and security personnel, joined the exercise at East Legon Hills and surrounding communities, where they cleared debris and desilted drains.
Speaking to the media during the exercise, the Chief Executive Officer of SLTF, Dr Saajida Shiraz, said the organisation is working closely with the Regional Coordinating Council to ensure students are effectively deployed to areas affected by the floods.
She said the involvement of students demonstrates their commitment to supporting national efforts and contributing to the wellbeing of their communities.
Meanwhile, NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim disclosed that more than 100 students have already been mobilised to participate in the exercise.
He said the move forms part of students’ contribution towards restoring communities affected by the floods and promoting a cleaner environment.
He added that all Student Representative Councils (SRCs) have been directed to organise clean-up exercises in their respective institutions and clear choked drains within surrounding communities.
The partnership reflects a strong commitment by students and stakeholders to support national efforts aimed at improving sanitation and preventing flooding.
